  • Judged by KZN Region on 11 January 2011
  • Ns 47mm hor, 32mm vert; ds 11 x 20mm; ps 10 x 18mm; ls 10 x 25mm; lip 12 x 22mm
  • 4 strong, erect burgundy stems carrying 17 flowers and 44 buds concentrated towards the apex. Flowers subtended by a conspicuous purplish bract, lip prominently displayed. Base colour white brushed with pale violet, more concentrated on reverse. Labellum royal purple with central bilaminate yellow callus. Spur, one and a half times longer and running parallel to pedicel.

  • A well grown plant in perlite and sphagnum moss, not previously seen in the region. Leaves immaculate, plicate and ruffled at the edges. Two growths, each carrying three erect, burgundy inflorescences with conspicuous bracts, with 25 flowers and 38 buds. Flower base colour white brushed with pale violet, the colour being more concentrated on the reverse; labellum royal purple with central bilaminate yellow callus; spur one and a half times longer than the flowers.

  • Sixty four flowers and thirty seven buds well presented on two erect inflorescences. Flower shape typical for the species with slightly open, starry shape. Lip lobes flat and well held. Flowers clear, pristine ,sparkling white overall, with pale yellow spot on the crest of the lip. Substance good, texture waxy and crystalline.

  • Ten fully open flowers and thirteen buds on three slightly arching inflorescences; petals typical, reflexing slightly; sepals spreading and recurving on older flowers; sepals and petals superb dark, even chocolate maroon brown; lip base apple green overlaid bright yellow centrally; column apple green and yellow, slight brown flush on back; to be commended for three inflorescences on leading growths; three spike difference in colour of buds may be female flowers; substance heavy, texture velvety. Low number of flowers noted; presentation somewhat lacking.

Substance firm, texture velvety.

Substance waxy, texture glistening.

Flower shape typical umbel format as for the genus; with flowers evenly presented on the inflorescences; dorsal sepal burnt orange; lateral sepals even apricot orange; petals and lip also slightly darker apricot orange; with hinged lip having a shiny texture. Substance average; texture velvety. For CHM – awarded for horticulturally desirable miniature habit of the plants (26cm across) very free flowering; remarkable colour which introduces new scope for breeding in the genus.

Sepals and petals yellow- beige, lip side lobes pale chocolate brown; mid lobe with four elongated pale yellow keels with brown tips; apical lobe white, arrow shaped with pointed tip. Smallish flowers and spotting on some leaves precluded a higher score.

Petals and sepals dark and even burgundy with darker venation; lip broad and flat, dark burgundy in colour; column cream overlaid burgundy. Substance heavy, texture waxy. Flowers very symmetrical with slightly uneven arrangement, due to large number of flowers. Plant commended for stunning presentation, size and number of flowers and beautiful deep and even colour.

  • This was another flowering of this Award of Merit plant which was judged the Best on Show at the SAOC Conference in Pretoria in 2000. Thirty -five fully opened spikes presented seven hundred and thirty- five flowers on a very well grown plant; flowers somewhat cupped, but all segments broad and well balanced; sepals and petals solid chocolate-burgundy; anther cap pale cream in contrast to burgundy column; substance solid; texture velvety. Trimming of leaf tips precluded a higher score.
